The hood travels. The shop’s life insurance usually doesn’t.

The
hood.

  • Shop one month, pipeline the next.
  • Per diem, no benefits.
  • Heat, heights, confined space.
  • Your rig, your note.

The
reason.

  • The house.
  • Your partner.
  • Your kids.
  • The life you have built.

Monday you might be in a fab shop. Next month you might be on a pipeline spread. The work changes faster than most benefit booklets do.

What follows the person, not the booth

  • A shop plan that ends the day you leave that shop’s payroll
  • Pipeline and field contracts that pay per diem and do not include benefits
  • A truck, rig, or booth payment that is in your name
  • An application that should ask about your health history, not a stereotype of the trade

If you are between contracts, find out whether last month’s coverage is still in force before you assume you are either covered or uninsured.

Welder questions

I bounce between W-2 shop work and 1099 field work. What usually breaks?
The shop’s group life insurance usually ends when you leave that payroll. The 1099 stretch often has no replacement. People in that pattern look at a policy that stays in their name through both.
Does welding itself decide whether I can get coverage?
Insurers look at duties, health, age, and the amount together. The word welder is not a yes or no. A licensed agent can ask which insurers fit the work you do, including heights, confined space, or travel if those are part of the job.
I own the truck that hauls my machine. Does that belong in this conversation?
If a lender or someone at home is on that note, yes. Life insurance is one way people plan for a payment that would otherwise land on someone else. It is separate from the commercial policy on the truck.
