Line-of-duty benefits, pension features, and a group life policy get blurred together at the kitchen table. They pay in different situations, and some of them stop when you leave the department.

What is the department’s, and what is yours

  • A line-of-duty benefit that may not pay unless the death is ruled in the line of duty
  • Group life insurance that can shrink or end at retirement, resignation, or a transfer
  • Overtime and details the household spends, which a flat department benefit does not mention
  • A spouse who has heard the department takes care of the family and has never seen the certificate

Ask for the certificate, not the rumor. You want the dollar amount, the beneficiary, and what happens if you retire, resign, or transfer.

Firehouse questions

If something happens off duty, does the line-of-duty benefit pay?
Often it does not. Those benefits are written for a specific kind of death. A personal policy is a different contract, and it is the one to read if you want coverage that is not limited to a shift.
I’m a volunteer and I also work a paid department job. Which plan counts?
Either, both, or neither. Volunteer associations and employers write their own benefits. List every department and association you belong to before you decide you are already covered.
I am a few years from retirement. Is there a reason to look before the last shift?
Department coverage can change right when age and health have changed too. You do not have to buy anything to ask a licensed agent what would stay with you after you leave.
